BC Hockey Official Resources 

Hockey Officials perform a vital role at all levels, without whom the game would not happen. The Hockey Canada Officiating Program is open to anyone interested in officiating the game of hockey, from beginners to seasoned veterans.

The lower levels are designed to get you started in officiating, while the higher levels are open to officials who have advanced through the lower levels and show potential to work the top levels of hockey in Canada, and Internationally.  NEW OFFICIALS - REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum of 12 years old by Dec 31st.
• Clinics usually take place between September 15 and November 30
• Register for the "HU-Officiating 1/2" Clinic. You MUST complete the Hockey University Officiating online course prior to registering for an in-class clinic. The course takes approximately three (3) hours to complete.
• Once you have completed the online course, register for an in-class clinic.
• View the instructions below for information on how to register for a clinic through the new HCR 3.0 system.
• All clinics consist of classroom sessions and on-ice sessions. Bring your skates, helmet (with visor) and a Whistle to your on-ice session.

RETURNING OFFICIALS

All officials must re-certify and take a clinic every season.

LEVEL 1: Prepare a young or new official to officiate minor hockey.

• New official (any age) or returning officials 15 years of age and younger
• Minimum age: 12 years; Maximum age: 15

LEVEL 2: Further enhance the training and skills of minor hockey officials.

• Officials 16 years of age or older

LEVEL 3: Prepare officials capable of refereeing minor hockey playoffs, minor hockey regional playoffs and female national championships, or being linespersons in Junior B, C, D, Senior and U15 or U18 regional championships.

• Fully certified Level 2 official
• Minimum one year of Level 2 officiating experience

LEVEL MEMBER HIGH PERFORMANCE: Prepare hockey officials capable of refereeing Senior, Junior A, B, C, D, minor hockey regional and national championships, female hockey national championships and designated minor hockey IIHF competition, or being a linesman in Major Junior, Junior A, Senior, CIS, CCAA, inter-branch and IIHF competition.

• Fully certified Level 3 official
• Minimum one year of Level 3 officiating experience

LEVEL NATIONAL HIGH PERFORMANCE: Prepare competent officials to referee Major Junior, Junior A, Senior, CIS, and inter-branch playoffs.

• Fully certified Level MHP official
• Minimum one year of Level MHP officiating experience

*all ages listed are as of December 31 of the current hockey season

HCR Account set-up

• In order to register for a clinic you must have an HCR 3.0 account - CREATE AN HCR 3.0 ACCOUNT >

All three steps must be completed prior to successfully registering.

STEP 1 - HOCKEY UNIVERSITY (HU)

For 1st year officials  (you are only required to complete once)

To register for the referee clinic, you must have an HCR account (see instruction above) and complete the online HU course.

Clinic fee will be reimbursed to those officiating a minimum of 10 WMHA League games.  NOTE:  if you are registered as a player, coach or league official, you do not have to pay the HC Assessment Fee (This is already covered under your registration as a player or coach.)

STEP 2 - CRC (criminal record check + Vulnerable Sector) 

ALL OFFICIALS 18 yrs +  MUST have a valid CRC on file with Hockey Canada.  THIS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE REGISTERING for a clinic.   You are encouraged to get this completed as soon as possible by visiting your local RRCMP detachment, and a copy of the certificate can be emailed to clinics@bchockey.net
